Travel Around the World: What’s Holding Me Back

January 30, 2012

I read this post from Twenty-Something Travel giving us 6 excuses people make when asked why they haven’t traveled around the world yet, if that’s what they really wanted. To be honest, these excuses are true and they’re lame excuses.

Money. Work. Loans. Companion. Safety. “Someday”.

These were the six that Steph listed for readers, and those who make the excuse of not traveling.

Here are the three “excuses” why I still haven’t gone on that RTW trip.

Money

Yes, I don’t have enough money that I can spend for travel without my dad’s permission. But I am working on this as I type. As much as possible, I force myself not to spend on anything that I don’t really need. Saving up bit by bit and investing in things that I know I’ll use when I travel.

Like that Instax Mini 50S that I bought.

Work

I’m a fresh graduate from college and I’m only twenty. Yeah, school ends pretty early for students here in the Philippines, but that’s changing.

I recently applied for work at an IT company and I got accepted. I haven’t really experienced the work life yet so I’m kind of excited – and a bit scared – of what will happen to me. I guess I’ll find out by February, because I start work on the 30th!

I’m also looking forward to learning Spanish because the project I was assigned to has a Spanish client. That’s a bonus for a language addict like me.

For now, I’m going to work and earn money and travel when I get the chance – holidays and maybe a few vacation leaves!

Parents

This is actually my biggest problem. I know it’s an excuse too but it’s one of the hardest things to overcome.

Standing up to an overprotective dad ain’t that easy, especially when he has four daughters to worry about. Having his eldest daughter run off traveling around the world alone won’t really calm his nerves would it?

So, I’m keeping this excuse for now and leaving traveling for a later time in life – probably just after a couple of years. I don’t want to delay this travel thing till it’s too late!

What’s holding you back from traveling?
